Here’s how to tell a clog from wear, how to do a cold pull following the official procedure, and when it’s time to replace the nozzle.

Clog or wear: how to tell

The symptoms are similar, but the fixes are different.

A clog — print quality suddenly got worse or printing stopped. Plastic comes out in spurts, the extruder clicks, sometimes nothing comes out at all.

Wear — quality dropped gradually over several spools. Lines got wider, fine details blurred and walls look rougher.

Wear is almost always caused by abrasive materials: carbon-fibre or glass-fibre filaments, metal-filled ones and glow-in-the-dark ones. Such plastics can eat through a brass nozzle in a few spools.

Cold pull — the official procedure

This is the main way to clear a clog without taking the hotend apart. Bambu Lab describes it like this (values are for PLA):

On the printer screen, open Settings → Temperature/Axis and set the nozzle temperature to 220 °C.

Once the hotend has heated up, insert filament into the extruder from the top and feed it with the extrude button until plastic comes out of the nozzle.

Lower the temperature to 100 °C and wait for the hotend to cool down. At this temperature the plastic is already firm enough to pull the debris out, but not yet stuck solid.

Slowly and steadily pull the filament straight up. A sharp jerk or pulling at an angle will snap the filament.

Inspect the tip. If there’s char or foreign matter on it, repeat the procedure. Do it several times until the plastic you pull out is clean.

Other materials need other temperatures — go by your filament’s working range and your printer model’s page on the manufacturer’s wiki.

When a cold pull won’t help

Replace the nozzle if:

after two or three cleanings the symptoms come back within a few hours of printing;

the opening looks worn out — lines are consistently wider than set;

you’ve printed with abrasive materials and several spools have gone through;

the nozzle tip has mechanical damage or burrs.

Brass or hardened steel

Brass conducts heat better, so it gives more consistent extrusion and a slightly cleaner surface — it’s the standard choice for PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU. Hardened steel is only needed for abrasive materials; because it conducts heat less well, print temperatures are usually raised by about 5–10 °C.

The practical takeaway is simple: if you don’t print composites, there’s no point paying extra for steel. If you do, brass simply won’t last to the end of the spool.

After replacing it

Always run a printer calibration and check the nozzle’s Z offset. Tighten the nozzle on a heated heater block — otherwise the joint won’t seal and plastic will start leaking along the thread.

What you may need: nozzles and hotends, a set of cleaning needles.

Sources

Bambu Lab Wiki — Nozzle/Hotend Unclogging Procedure for X1/P1

Bambu Lab Wiki — What is a Cold Pull and how is it performed?

Bambu Lab Wiki — 3D Printer Clog

This article has been checked against the official Bambu Lab documentation.
